Here is a layout for a typical wreath.
A poor looking layout picture for an outdoor advent wreath.
I put my lights on a six foot diameter ring of green lights.

Pay attention to electrical issues.
DO NOT PLUG IN ONE STRING INTO ANOTHER.
The 7.5 watt bulb at the end of each string is enough additional load for the string.
Purchase enough extension cords to ensure each string has its own power source.

You wind up with something that looks like this...

The result

Make sure you get your first candle up the first Sunday of Advent.
Lay out your green lights and light them every night. Then plug in just one
of your "candles" to mark the first Sunday. The white at the top will act
like a candle flame and the colored lights will simulate the illuminated candle
wax. Each Sunday power up an additional candle. On Christmas Eve
Plug in your Christ candle and enjoy the fact you have marked down
the Sundays of Advent to Christmas Day.
